All India Bar Examination

The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is a nationwide examination conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI). It is a compulsory examination for law graduates to practice law in India. The purpose of the examination is to assess the ability of law graduates to practice law in India. It tests the candidate's knowledge of various legal subjects and the professional skills required to act as a lawyer. Passing the AIBE is essential to obtain the Bar Council of India "Certificate of Practice" required to become a lawyer in India.

The Bar Council of India discussed and approved the All India Bar Examination in its meeting on 30 April 2010, when the Council decided to make the examination compulsory for all law students graduating from the 2009–2010 academic year, and that candidates can apply for admission to the examination only after being registered as an advocate under section 24 of the Advocates Act, 1961.

The sole purpose of the AIBE exam was to raise the professional level of a lawyer; therefore, the AIBE qualification is not relevant to those who are not interested in entering the legal profession. Therefore, those candidates who are not interested in practicing law cannot be exempted from registering with the state bar for appearing in AIBE. After passing the exam, the candidate will receive a practicing certificate and will be allowed to practice in any court in India. The exam will be conducted in 40 Indian cities in national and regional languages.

The All India Bar Examination is a certification examination conducted twice a year by the Bar Council of India for law graduates who are ready to enter the profession of bar. In 50 cities with 140 centers the exam is conducted as an open book exam. The exam evaluates the basic knowledge of the member and determines the minimum level to enter the legal profession, in addition, the candidate's analytical ability is evaluated. After passing the All India Bar Examination, the candidate is awarded the Bar Council of India Practicing Certificate. A qualified member of the examination may participate in a hearing in any court and administrative body. The exam is a multiple choice model and will be conducted offline for 3 and half hours.

The All India Bar Examination is a post-registration examination in which individuals are said to have initially registered provisionally and promised to clear the examination within two years of registration. The concept and duty of temporary registration was introduced by the BCI decision dated 12 April 2013. At the same time, as a result of the decision issued by the BCI on 31.01.2017, it was clarified that even if the right to practice in the profession is only for two years after provisional registration, the named person can continue to take the bar exam as many times as possible. As a result, each temporarily registered person is allowed to practice for two years, but is allowed to take the test not only for two years, but as many times as possible until he passes the exam, when the date of calculation of working life is the date of initial registration.
